“For some, like entertainment, travel or hospitality, a return to a pre-pandemic environment is unimaginable in the foreseeable future (and maybe never in some cases…). For others, manufacturing or food, it is more about finding ways to adjust to the shock and capitalize on some new trends (like digital) to thrive in the post pandemic era.” Page 174.
It is clear, with the policies set under the Biden administration and others around the globe, there are certain industries that are to die out and never be seen again. The movie theaters are open again but unless you live in Texas or Florida they are not at full capacity and two states cannot keep an industry going that is already losing money with film productions shut down due to social distancing. Hollywood is literally supporting their own demise with their support of lockdowns. Some will say that it will come back and that they have enough money to wait it out but if theaters are closed is the industry going to convert to digital and work with only a fraction of their income. Wonder Woman 1984 might be the last big budget movie produced with the way it was released in a handful of theaters and a streaming release that made no money. The sequel to a hit movie turned into a huge flop because of Covid-19.
78% of jobs in the US are in the service industry. How does a person serve others with social distancing and limited seating space? They don’t. Restaurants already function with a limited income and that is when they are full. If they don’t have a liquor license they don’t survive. To tell a restaurant they come only function at 25% is to tell them to close their doors. Meanwhile, fast food is still operating with small spaces in the kitchens and handing out crappy quality food through drive thru windows to people who should be eating healthy to fight a virus. This is not the case and for some reason the government says it is okay to offer low quality food to those who should be eating better during a pandemic.
What is this obsession with “Post Pandemic”? What does this really mean? It would appear that while the people in charge continue to tell us that eventually we will go back to normal they have no plan to actually let that happen. There has been an attack on the food industry as well. Production facilities have been shut down. Employees test positive for a virus they show no symptoms for and they don’t get sick or die from it. Yet, the business is shut down and people lose money. The business loses money and employees. The animals that were being processed are a waste and sacrificed to the god that is Covid-19. There is no evidence that food tainted with Covid-19 will transfer Covid-19. This is why we cook food. To kill bacteria and viruses that might be on the food. This is why eating things like raw spinach is more likely to make someone sick from E Coli than eating a steak. One is cooked and sterilized the other is not washed properly and not cooked to kill any germs. At yet we keep hearing stories of tainted food and processing centers shut down.
Digital, the answer that Schwab loves to hang on, does little to help society. Humans are social creatures. We need face to face contact for communication. Digital doesn’t replace dating or business meetings. When you enter a contract with someone it is always good to meet them face to face to figure out if they are lying or trying to swindle you. As one story goes, a man goes golfing with a possible business partner. During the game the man starts to cheat in order to have a better score. Afterwards the man asked his wife what she thought. She pointed out the man was a cheater and not to do business with him. the man followed her advice and later they found out the man had become the business partner of a company that caught him embezzling money and later sent him to jail. The things that are being pushed in order to adjust businesses for the post pandemic future are bound to aid in their failing under these conditions.
